Cable & Wireless lands Home Office single non-emergency number contract

06 March 2006

Cable & Wireless announced today that it has been awarded a high profile contract to supply the UK Government with its all-new Single Non-Emergency Number service.

Launching later this year in five Wave 1 areas, it is a joint Home Office and Office of the Deputy Prime Minister initiative and will provide easy access to community safety advice, information and action. The service will be delivered by Police and Local Authorities partnerships in a joint approach to community safety.

The new service is aimed at improving access to and delivery of non-emergency services and increasing public confidence in the handling of non-emergency calls. With some 70% of current calls to the police 999 emergency service not requiring an emergency response the new service should also reduce the burden on 999.

Cable & Wireless is already one of only three suppliers of the 999 service; this additional multi-million pound five year contract is a single supplier contract and sees Cable & Wireless providing all the call routing, traffic management and announcement capabilities for the new service.

Martin Goodman, director of Public Sector at Cable & Wireless, comments: "The policy aims of the new service are all about improvement - of citizens' confidence and access, and of the efficiency and quality of service provided by the emergency services. We're delighted to be partnering with Government on such a high profile initiative."
