NHSMAIL SERVICE TO TRANSITION ONTO MICROSOFT EXCHANGE PLATFORM
06 July 2007

The NHSmail service was launched in October 2004 and at present almost 260,000 NHS staff are registered for an account. Endorsed by the British Medical Association and the Royal College of Nursing, the service is a secure means for sending patient identifiable information, and as it can be accessed from anywhere via any device connected to the internet, it is particularly beneficial for peripatetic and community-based staff.

The technology originally deployed was found to be the most appropriate solution available at the time; however, rapid advances in technology have meant that new and alternative options have become available which better meet the evolving requirements of the service.

Cable&Wireless worked in partnership with NHS Connecting for Health, to undertake a full feasibility study and agreed on the technology refresh.

It is anticipated that the move to Microsoft Exchange 2007 running Outlook and Outlook Web Access will lead to a significantly enhanced user experience, and will also improve the migration process for NHS organisations implementing NHSmail as their sole email service.

Martin Goodman, Managing Director for Public Sector and Systems Integrators at Cable&Wireless Europe, Asia and US said: “We’re absolutely focused on ensuring we deliver a customer experience that is second to none. C&W worked in partnership with NHS CFH on a feasibility study to establish the most appropriate technology solution moving forward, and between us we have concluded that as a result of increasing demands for functionality and flexibility of use, Exchange 2007 offers the best option for an enhanced user experience.”
